Crypto Policy Review Looms as U.S. Agencies Press Ahead Without Congressional Clarity

Share

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is planning to review its crypto policy as federal agencies move forward without new market structure legislation. The CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee will meet on August 20 to discuss regulatory options for crypto assets, including how regulation can complement future congressional action. The committee will also examine artificial intelligence and prediction markets.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking similar steps, with a meeting scheduled for Friday to discuss new rules for investment contracts involving crypto assets. An SEC spokesperson stated that the agency will work within its authority to advance crypto regulation until legislation is enacted.

The CFTC has been without leadership gaps since only Michael Selig has been confirmed as a commissioner and chair. Despite lawmakers' calls for action, there is no indication from President Donald Trump that additional nominations will be made.
