Crypto Privacy Tools: Balancing Legitimate Need with Illicit Exploitation
A joint research report from ChangeNOW and CoinRabbit has shed light on the use of crypto privacy tools, highlighting both legitimate and illicit uses.
The report, titled 'Financial Privacy in the Digital Age,' draws data from various sources including TRM Labs, Chainalysis, and the UNODC to map the landscape of crypto privacy.
According to the findings, on-chain privacy has become a crucial tool for individuals and businesses seeking to protect sensitive financial information. It shields high-net-worth holders from physical extortion and targeted kidnapping, prevents corporate rivals from spying on treasury movements, and allows humanitarian efforts to operate discreetly in conflict zones.
The report also highlights the vulnerability of fiat off-ramps, where crypto is converted into spendable currency, as a key enforcement weakness. It recommends shifting regulatory resources toward these areas rather than restricting transactional privacy for general users.
The research profiles two working examples of privacy architecture: ChangeNOW's Private Crypto Transfers and CoinRabbit's custodial model, both designed to preserve AML compliance while maintaining user discretion.
