Crypto Project Closures Skyrocket in 2026: DeFi Protocols Bear Brunt
The cryptocurrency industry has seen a significant number of project closures this year, with data suggesting that between 99 and 101 projects have ceased operations or gone inactive since January 2026. This includes DeFi protocols, wallets, exchanges, Layer-2 infrastructures, and NFT projects.
DeFi protocols make up the largest share of closures, accounting for more than half of the total. Notable casualties include BitMart, which announced its orderly exit on July 27, and AscendEX, which shut down on July 1. Other notable projects to cease operations include Goldfinch, Zapper, Loopring, and Botanix.
The primary driver behind these closures is the depletion of venture capital funding raised during the 2021 bull market. Revenue never materialized at a sufficient level to sustain operations, and follow-on rounds in the current environment require projects to demonstrate profitability. The shift in the market towards frameworks built around sustainable fee generation has also made it difficult for projects that couldn't adapt.
