Crypto Project Shutdowns Surpass 2022 Bear Market Levels in 2026

Share

The crypto industry is experiencing an accelerated rate of project shutdowns in 2026, surpassing even the levels seen during the 2022 bear market. According to Cryptorank, a total of 17 notable projects have shut down this year, raising $8.9B in disclosed funding but failing to make a significant impact on the crypto economy.

The shutdowns are largely attributed to consolidation, as several Web3 projects were unable to compete with established players and failed to attract sufficient users. The recent outflow of liquidity from tokenized equities and perpetual futures trading also contributed to the decline of these projects.

Some notable examples include the shutdown of SecondFi App after a high-profile wallet exploit in June, as well as the Bitmex exchange's inability to find a buyer and continue operations. Additionally, Magic Eden wallet is set to sunset in Q1, while CTRL Wallet will run until August.
