Crypto Projects Shut Down En Masse as Industry Undergoes Structural Recalibration
Over sixty crypto projects have shut down in the first seven months of 2026, including Layer-1 blockchains, centralized exchanges, DeFi aggregators, wallet infrastructure, and governance platforms. This is not a cyclical downturn but a structural recalibration of the industry.
The closure of these projects reveals a fundamental disconnect between early-stage capital raised and actual on-chain activity. For example, Sophon, which was built on the zkSync stack, had an average of 100 to 200 daily active users generating aggregate fees of just $30 per day, making it impossible for the network to sustain itself.
Security exploits have also played a significant role in the closure of DeFi protocols. Radiant Capital suffered a $50 million drain in 2024 and was unable to restore its collateral position, leading to final market liquidation. Similarly, Step Finance experienced a $40 million treasury hack in January 2026, forcing operational closure by February 24.
The industry must treat security exploits as continuous operational risks rather than exceptional failures. Projects that survived these incidents possessed pause mechanisms and debt restructuring procedures executed within hours, not days.
