Crypto Regulation Bill Hits Roadblock as Senate Votes on Clarity Act

Share

The long-awaited Clarity Act, a bill aimed at regulating the crypto sector in America, is facing fierce opposition and a critical procedural vote in the Senate. The 600-page bill would establish clear legislative guidelines for the industry, marking a significant shift from the current patchwork of regulations that can change depending on the administration in power.

Crypto executives argue that the bill is necessary to provide clarity and oversight, with Ryan VanGrack, vice chair of Coinbase, stating that 'tens of millions of Americans are investing in products that don't have clear regulatory oversight.'

However, opponents, including Democrats and community bank leaders, are pushing back against the bill. One key sticking point is an ethics clause intended to prevent presidents and other elected officials from profiting from the crypto industry while in office.

The current version of the bill would give the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) majority control over the regulation of the sector, with opponents arguing that this would allow the industry to avoid heavy regulatory scrutiny. The CFTC has defended its oversight of the industry, and Trump administration regulators have also come out in support of the bill.
