Crypto Regulation Narrative Hijacked by Phishing Scams and Meme Coin Hacks
Crypto scammers are leveraging the current narrative of regulation to trick users into handing over their personal information and digital assets. The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a warning about a new phishing tactic targeting crypto holders, where fake tax agency letters are being sent with a QR code that links to a lookalike IRS domain.
The scammers ask users to register on the site by scanning the QR code, threatening penalties if they don't comply. This allows them to mine personal information from unsuspecting users, which can be used to impersonate them and steal their cryptocurrencies.
IRS-CI Chief Jarod Koopman commented on the matter, saying: “Criminals continue to exploit public trust in government agencies by creating convincing fake websites and official-looking correspondence.”
