Crypto Ringleader Pleads Guilty to $245M Racketeering Scheme
A 22-year-old crypto ringleader has pleaded guilty to his role in a $245 million racketeering scheme. Malone Lam, a citizen of Singapore and resident of Miami, was charged with leading an international 'social engineering' operation that stole and laundered cryptocurrency.
Lam used aliases such as 'Anne Hathaway', '$$$', and 'King Greavy' to coordinate the roles of his co-conspirators. He found victims through deception, invaded their privacy, and stole hundreds of millions in cryptocurrency.
The scheme involved spending stolen funds on luxury goods and services, including nightclubs that cost up to $500,000 an evening, luxury handbags and watches, rental homes in Los Angeles, the Hamptons, and Miami, and several high-end cars worth between $100,000 and $3.8 million.
Lam faces up to 20 years in prison and a status hearing is scheduled for December 8. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said that if you build a cybercrime empire, they will find you, dismantle your operation, and hold you accountable.
