A group of young men in their late teens and early twenties pulled off one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts in U.S. history, swindling a stranger out of bitcoin worth over $240 million in August 2024.

The scammers used social engineering tactics to manipulate their victim into revealing sensitive information, which they then used to steal the crypto.

They laundered the proceeds through multiple exchange platforms and converted virtual currency into government-issued cash with the help of money laundering specialists.

The group's lavish spending drew attention from authorities, who arrested the ringleader, 22-year-old Malone Lam, in September 2024. He is now awaiting a plea agreement hearing.
