Crypto Security Risks on Full Display as Triple-A and WEMIX Suffer High-Profile Breaches
Two high-profile incidents have highlighted the ongoing risks in crypto security: a hack on Triple-A's treasury wallets and an exploit on the WEMIX blockchain. According to Triple-A, attackers breached their treasury wallets on July 25, resulting in losses of approximately $11.8 million. The company emphasized that customer funds were unaffected, as client assets are held separately in trust accounts.
The breach occurred when attackers gained unauthorized access to certain wallets holding the company's digital assets, with Specter estimating the losses at around $11.8 million across Ethereum, TRON, Polygon, and Arbitrum wallets. Triple-A stated that only its treasury assets were affected and that the financial impact will be fully covered by its treasury reserves.
Less than 24 hours after the Triple-A incident, the WEMIX blockchain disclosed a separate security breach involving its WEMIX$ stablecoin contract. An attacker gained control of the contract and minted about 5.22 million unbacked WEMIX$ tokens before swapping part of them and moving roughly $724,000 worth of assets off-chain.
