Crypto Shift Mispriced, Say Bitwise Exec
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes that investors are failing to recognize a significant shift in financial infrastructure, driven by blockchain technology. Despite numerous developments from major institutions and banks, traditional and crypto investors alike seem to be anchored on outdated narratives.
Hougan pointed out several key events that demonstrate the scale of this shift. For example, SEC Chairman Paul Atkins' 'Project Crypto' aims to modernize securities regulation for on-chain markets. BlackRock's $2 billion BUIDL tokenized Treasury fund on Uniswap and Apollo's tokenization of its $700 billion Diversified Credit Fund across six blockchains are also notable examples.
Major banks, including JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo, are exploring a joint stablecoin. Fidelity is hiring a DeFi vaults manager. Hougan argues that these moves indicate a fundamental change in how traditional finance engages with blockchain technology, but investors are not acknowledging the significance of these developments.
Hougan attributes this disconnect to anchoring bias, the tendency to fixate on initial information encountered. He notes that tokenized real-world assets have grown sharply from 2020 to 2025 and warns that investors must re-evaluate their understanding of crypto's potential.
