Crypto Shutdowns Mount as POAP and Hashdex Bitcoin ETF Face Demise

Two unrelated but telling entries have been added to the list of crypto shutdown news this week: digital collectibles pioneer POAP is closing after more than five years, and asset manager Hashdex is winding down its Hashdex Bitcoin ETF (NYSE Arca: DEFI).

POAP's founder announced the platform's wind-down in a post on X. Over that stretch, POAP became shorthand for proof of attendance in crypto circles, minting collectibles at events such as hackathons and Devcon.

The founder pointed to crypto's funding cycles and distribution dynamics, saying it was hard to build a sustainable business without cannibalizing the community spirit that made POAP meaningful in the first place. Building on a fast-changing technical stack, in the middle of a hype cycle, only added friction.

Hashdex confirmed it will close and liquidate the Hashdex Bitcoin ETF, which held about $14.7 million in assets as of July 30, 2026. The fund's own numbers show it has been down sharply over the past year and the past month alike, even though it's still up substantially since its launch in 2022.
