Crypto Software Wallets Take Center Stage in 2026
A software wallet is an app on your phone, computer, or browser that holds the private keys controlling your cryptocurrency. Unlike an exchange account, where a company holds your coins for you, a software wallet gives you direct control of your own keys while staying connected to the internet for everyday use.
According to The Block, MetaMask added native support for Solana, Sei, and Monad in 2025 before rolling out Bitcoin support, on top of its original Ethereum base. For a beginner, that means one wallet can now often cover several coins instead of five separate apps.
A crypto software wallet is exposed to phishing sites, malicious browser extensions, and fake apps that mimic real wallets. Trust Wallet reports that its built-in Security Scanner flagged more than $191 million in potentially harmful transactions in 2025 alone.
