Crypto Treasuries Diverge as Companies Prioritize Financing Efficiency
Crypto treasuries are evolving as companies focus on more than just accumulating digital assets. Three corporate treasuries - BitMine, Strive, and Strategy - have adopted distinct models for managing their capital.
BitMine is expanding its Ethereum (ETH) reserve through staking, which generates income from the network's 2.62% staking rate. The company has reported that it now holds around 5.96 million ETH, with 85% of those holdings staked. This approach creates two potential return channels for BitMine: exposure to the price of ETH and staking income.
Strive is financing its Bitcoin (BTC) accumulation through a variable-rate perpetual preferred stock called SATA. The company used $1 billion in notional value from SATA to acquire an additional 469 BTC, bringing its total holdings to around 25,000 BTC. This model gives Strive another source of capital beyond common equity and introduces a new benchmark for investors: whether the returns generated by additional Bitcoin exposure compensate for the cost of the preferred capital used to finance it.
Strategy, on the other hand, is managing the securities wrapped around its massive Bitcoin reserve. The company has repurchased $139 million worth of its own stock and expanded its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program from $1 billion to $2 billion. This suggests that Strategy is focused not only on acquiring more BTC but also on maintaining a stable financing ecosystem.
