Crypto Treasury Stocks Soar as Bitcoin Fund Jumps 5%
Crypto treasury stocks are experiencing a significant surge, with Strategy and Bitmine Immersion Technologies leading the way. The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) jumped 5% to $45.88, while the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) gained only 1% to $772.97. This disparity in performance is driving the leverage stack, with Strategy and Bitmine stock prices rising by 14% and 12%, respectively.
Strategy holds Bitcoin on its balance sheet, while Bitmine has a significant Ethereum position, with over 5.9 million tokens. The company's chairman, Thomas Lee, has stated that it aims to own 5% of all ETH outstanding. Bitmine is also developing the Made-in-America Validator Network, a staking infrastructure initiative that will allow it to put its Ethereum holdings to work.
The past month and year-to-date figures show that Strategy stock was up 30% over the past month but still down 19% YTD, while Bitmine stock rose 32% in the same period but fell 15% YTD. The Bitcoin fund shows a similar pattern, with gains of 21% over the past month and a year-to-date loss.
Investors should be cautious when entering crypto treasury names, as the leverage that drives these stocks can also amplify losses. A recovery of this size implies a larger drawdown earlier in the year, and investors should scale their exposure accordingly.
