Crypto Users Sacrifice Self-Custody for Convenience with Antarctic Wallet
Antarctic Wallet is a payment service that connects crypto users to merchants through familiar bank QR codes, but it comes with a trade-off, users give up self-custody and accept opaque third-party settlement. The wallet supports USDT and TON over the TON and TRC20 networks, and its key features include card top-ups and withdrawals, virtual cards, AliPay, Steam, and mobile top-ups, mass transfers, AML checks, and a referral program.
The service has gained traction in Southeast Asia, where users and merchants are already trained to scan QR codes. In Thailand, for example, Bank of Thailand data recorded 2.53 billion PromptPay transactions worth THB 4.66 trillion in May 2023. Antarctic Wallet is not self-custodial, with the company controlling private keys and an omnibus wallet infrastructure.
The wallet's benefits are clear, it addresses a real gap between crypto users who hold USDT but struggle to spend it, and merchants who have little reason to add a crypto checkout. However, for savings or large balances, Antarctic Wallet may not be the best choice due to its custodial nature and limited self-custody options.
