Crypto VCs Face Crushing Reality: Years to Recoup Investments
A recent tweet by Trader and researcher Bando highlighted a concerning trend in the crypto space. A table showing combined figures for once-hyped projects revealed that they had raised $7.5 billion from venture capital, but were only generating $1,306 in daily revenue.
Running the math, it appears that this capital will take approximately 15,418 years to recoup through product income alone.
This is not a new issue, as CryptoRank has been tracking similar stories. In April, they published a ranking of ten crypto projects that had raised money at billion-dollar-plus valuations and were now trading significantly lower, with some down more than 99% from their peak values.
The largest loss in absolute dollar terms was Starknet, which raised $282.5 million from Paradigm, Sequoia, and GreenOaks at an $8 billion valuation, but is now worth around $199 million.
Part of the problem lies in tokenomics, as most projects launched with a small fraction of total supply circulating and a fully diluted valuation calculated on the rest. This means that networks are often priced for ecosystems that haven't shown up yet, leading to a gap between valuation and use.
