Crypto Volumes Soar as Coinbase Streamlines Order Books
Global cryptocurrency trading volumes surged to multi-month highs in August 2026, driven by a 24 percent rise in Bitcoin prices and strong spot ETF inflows. This growth coincides with major exchange moves to streamline order books.
Coinbase announced it would suspend eight non-USD trading pairs on September 15 to consolidate liquidity into its more active markets. The decision follows Coinbase's regular review of markets intended to improve overall market health and consolidate liquidity, as stated by the company.
The market expansion also saw Binance lead August spot activity, while Coinbase recorded a daily volume of $8 billion on August 21 and saw a 30-day spot volume climb 429 percent by August 25. Gate.io posted a 667 percent volume rise in the same period.
Retail and institutional participation gained momentum across multiple platforms. Robinhood reported a 61 percent month-over-month increase in notional crypto trading volume for August, reaching roughly $17.5 billion, as U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs drew between $3 billion and $3.8 billion in net monthly inflows.
