Crypto Winter May Be Less Severe Than Previous Bear Markets
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that the current crypto downturn is fundamentally healthier than previous bear markets. The current decline of 49% in Bitcoin's market capitalization, from near $4.4 trillion to $2.23 trillion, pales in comparison to the 88% drop in 2018 and 73% in 2022.
Hougan cites stronger infrastructure, a favorable regulatory environment, and the emergence of stablecoin and tokenization markets as reasons for the healthier downturn. He notes that BlackRock and Apollo are building on decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, ETFs are available, and concerns about fiat currency are rising.
However, not everyone shares Hougan's optimism. Alphractal founder Joao Wedson noted that long-term holders of Bitcoin still have unrealized profits, but also warned that when this metric turns negative, it typically marks the phase of maximum market depression.
