Crypto Winter: Why This Bear Market Is Different
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan compared the current crypto downturn to previous bear markets in 2018 and 2022, arguing that this time it's fundamentally healthier. The current market has seen a 49% decline from its peak near $4.4 trillion in total market capitalization, which Hougan notes is less severe than the 88% drop in 2018 or the 73% fall in 2022.
Hougan attributed the stronger resilience of the current market to better infrastructure, a favorable regulatory environment, and the emergence of stablecoin and tokenization markets. He highlighted the growth of trillion-dollar stablecoins and the increasing adoption of decentralized finance (DeFi) by major players like BlackRock and Apollo.
A contrasting view was offered by Alphractal founder Joao Wedson, who noted that while long-term holders are still in profit, a key metric has turned negative. When this happens, it often marks the phase of maximum market depression before a new bull run begins.
