Crypto Wrench Attacks Hit Record High with $124 Million in Damages

Share

Crypto 'wrench attacks' have surged to record highs in the first half of this year, according to blockchain security firm CertiK. The number of confirmed incidents reached 52, a 33.3% increase year-over-year and a record high for any first-half period.

The severity of the damage is escalating even faster than the incident count. The recorded financial impact linked to these events ballooned to $124.18 million (approximately ¥20 billion), an 11.8-fold surge from the same period last year.

France becomes the global 'epicenter' of these attacks, with 39 confirmed cases occurring in Europe and 33 incidents alone accounting for 63.5% of the global total. French authorities are stepping up their response, charging 88 suspects across 12 investigations by late April and preparing preventive measures for cryptocurrency holders.

The shift in attack methods is also significant, with home invasions becoming the primary tactic, skyrocketing from just 1 case to 20 in the first half of this year. Kidnappings rose from 12 to 16 cases, while instances of torture and murder remained flat at 4 and 1 case, respectively.

CertiK recommends not disclosing holdings or home addresses online, segregating funds used for daily expenses, storing signing devices separately, and introducing multi-person approval processes for large assets. The firm cautions against simply doubling the first-half figure to predict an annual total of 100 cases due to the quarterly pace slowing in the second quarter.
