Crypto Wrench Attacks on Pace to Break Record in 2026
Crypto wrench attacks have become increasingly common in the first half of 2026, with over $30 million stolen globally through late June. This marks a significant increase from previous years, with Chainalysis estimating that the total could reach a record-breaking $58 million by year-end if the current pace continues.
According to data compiled by Chainalysis, home invasions represented 37% of documented attacks, up sharply from 14% in 2025. This trend is particularly pronounced in France, which recorded 30 publicly known cases through mid-year and a total of 77 crypto-linked kidnappings and detentions nationwide.
The French surge has been attributed to compromised personal data, with Chainalysis suggesting that a tax official may have sold dossiers containing investors' identities, addresses, holdings, and tax information. This has led to widespread attacks on individuals close to crypto holders, with relatives or acquaintances representing 25% to 30% of documented cases.
