Crypto Wrench Attacks Skyrocket in 2026 with France at Epicenter
The crypto industry is facing a new security threat that has nothing to do with smart contract exploits or phishing links. Instead, it involves actual physical violence.
CertiK documented 52 verified 'wrench attacks' during the first half of 2026, which is a 33.3% increase from the 39 incidents recorded in the same period in 2025. The financial toll is far more alarming: $124.1 million in total exposure, more than 11 times the $10.5 million from H1 2025.
France has become ground zero for these attacks, with 33 out of 52 verified cases occurring in the country. This represents roughly 63.5% of all documented wrench attacks globally concentrated in a single country.
Home invasions linked to crypto theft have also surged from just 1 case in H1 2025 to 20 cases in H1 2026, according to CertiK data. Chainalysis noted that attackers often time their assaults to coincide with surges in cryptocurrency prices.
