Cryptocurrency Billionaires Fuel Farage's Party with Record £36M Donations
Nigel Farage's Reform UK party has received another massive donation from a cryptocurrency billionaire. Thai-based businessman Christopher Harborne gave £36 million to the party, matching the record gift from fellow crypto investor Ben Delo made just a day prior. The twin donations amount to a total of £72 million for Reform.
Harrowborne's contribution is in addition to his previous donation of £9 million last August, making him Reform's largest donor. He stated that his donation was 'a philanthropic gift to our country' intended to help the party prepare for government. Harborne also emphasized the need for a 'profitable and dynamic economy' to address the challenges of nuclear war, AI, and climate change.
The donations come as Reform UK faces scrutiny over its finances, including an ongoing criminal investigation into allegations it breached rules on political donations. The party denies any wrongdoing and has pledged to co-operate with the probe. MPs recently backed measures to cap overseas donations at £100,000 and suspend funding through cryptocurrency, but the draft legislation still needs to be passed by the House of Lords.
