Cryptocurrency Crime Spikes with Physical Attacks and Kidnappings on the Rise
Chainalysis has sounded an alarm on cryptocurrency crime, noting that it's moved beyond online hacks to include kidnappings and other violent incidents. According to a recent report by the blockchain analytics firm, these physical attacks have become increasingly common as criminals target holders of self-custody wallets.
The report estimates that over $30 million has been stolen through successful physical attacks during the first half of 2026. This is a notable increase from previous years, with the success rate for violent theft attempts dropping to 26% in 2026 compared to 49% in 2025 and 67% in 2024.
Chainalysis notes that despite the decrease in success rates, physical attacks are becoming more common due to the value of cryptocurrencies being targeted. In fact, the report highlights that the number of attacks has increased, with France recording the highest number of publicly known violent crypto incidents since 2023.
