Cryptocurrency Industry Soars, Leaving Europe Behind in Employment Growth
The cryptocurrency industry has experienced significant growth over the past few years, driven by institutional investment and regulatory advancements. As a result, developers, lawyers, financial professionals, and marketers have flocked to this sector, making it larger than traditional industries like tobacco or coffee.
According to the National Cryptocurrency Association Report, approximately 34,000 jobs in the US are supported by the cryptocurrency industry, with an average annual salary of $133,000. This is more than twice the median American income, making this sector highly attractive for those looking for employment opportunities.
The report also notes that every direct cryptocurrency job supports around six additional positions through supply chains and consumption. Consequently, the entire sector generates approximately 500,000 full-time equivalent jobs. The majority of these jobs are concentrated in California, New York, and Texas but have a significant presence across nearly all US states.
While there is no official European database tracking cryptocurrency industry employment, Statista estimates that Europe accounts for around 25-30% of global activity, which translates to approximately 60,000-75,000 workers. However, these numbers do not solely consist of trading positions but also software developers, cybersecurity experts, customer support staff, marketers, and financial analysts.
In contrast to Asia and the US, Europe's growth in this sector is hindered by regulatory environments, compliance requirements, and limited backing. Nevertheless, it is estimated that up to 100 million Europeans could be employed within the cryptocurrency industry, roughly a quarter of the adult population.
