Cryptocurrency Lobbying Allegations Spark Controversy in Washington

Share

Senator Bernie Sanders has claimed that politicians are being told not to 'antagonize' big-money interests, including cryptocurrency companies, following their significant election-season spending. According to Sanders, the industry is lobbying Congress to pass the Clarity Act, which he describes as 'corrupt.' The senator cites a report showing that cryptocurrency companies spent $189 million on the midterm elections, accounting for 37% of all corporate political spending during the cycle.

Ripple and Coinbase Global Inc. led the industry's efforts, with Sanders suggesting that the industry is now pushing Congress to pass legislation in their favor. The senator has been an outspoken critic of big money in politics, describing it as 'legalized bribery.' He is also opposed to the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, which he believes must be overturned.

Sanders also took aim at President Donald Trump, questioning how someone who labeled cryptocurrency a 'scam' in 2021 has now become one of its biggest profiteers. The senator laughed, saying, 'You've got to give this guy credit,' and noted that Trump's billion-dollar cryptocurrency income is a result of his own profiteering from the industry.
