Cryptocurrency Nightmare: What Happens When You Send to the Wrong Network
The nightmare of sending cryptocurrency to the wrong network is all too real for many users. But what actually happens when this mistake occurs? In some cases, it's possible to recover the funds, but in others, they may be permanently lost.
Crypto exists on various networks, each with its own unique characteristics and address formats. Bitcoin, for example, lives on its own network, while USDT can exist on multiple chains, including Ethereum (ERC-20), TRON (TRC-20), BNB Chain (BEP-20), and Solana.
If you send USDT TRC-20 to an address expecting ERC-20, the funds will still reach their destination, but not where they're supposed to be. If the recipient is watching the Ethereum network for incoming deposits, they'll never see it.
The outcome depends on several factors, including which networks are involved and who controls the destination address. In some cases, recovery may be possible through exchange support or by switching wallet networks. However, if the funds are sent to a contract address with no mechanism to move the tokens or a burn address, they're likely gone for good.
