Cryptocurrency Options Expiry Looms with Minimal Expected Impact
Approximately $2 billion in cryptocurrency options are set to expire this Friday, with a relatively low impact expected on spot markets. The total includes around 16,500 Bitcoin options contracts worth about $1.6 billion and 153,000 Ethereum contracts valued at $420 million. This week's expiry event is smaller than previous ones, suggesting minimal market disruption despite the substantial notional value.
The put/call ratio for this week's Bitcoin options stands at 0.75, indicating a slight dominance of call (long) contracts over puts (shorts). The open interest remains highest at the $120,000 strike price on Deribit, with around $1.8 billion in value. Ethereum's funding rates are close to zero following a recent spike, and its volatility maintains a higher premium than Bitcoin.
Derivatives specialist Greeks Live described market sentiment as 'cautiously bearish' earlier this week due to low volatility. They noted that options for next week are priced at 40% volatility, with front-month contracts below, suggesting potential market weakness. The stagnant spot market trends have led to a decline in strong directional sentiment.
