Cryptocurrency Scammers Targeting Grieving Families in North Wales
North Wales Police have issued a warning about a new tactic used by scammers to target families after a death. The fraudsters contact the family claiming that their relative had invested in cryptocurrency before they died, and that the investment is now worth £300,000.
The police say that the callers persuade a family member to give out bank details, and try to get them to open an online account to receive the money. However, this is a recovery scam, and the goal of the scammers is to withdraw money from the account.
North Wales Police are urging the public to be cautious when receiving unsolicited contact about inheritances, investments or cryptocurrency. They advise never sharing bank details with an unexpected caller, and to end the call if unsure.
The force also recommends that anyone who thinks they have been targeted by a scam should hang up and dial 159, which connects directly to their own bank's fraud team.
