Cryptocurrency Scams Evolve: How to Identify the Growing Threat

Share

Crypto scams have become increasingly sophisticated, combining phishing, impersonation, malware, and AI to target investors. According to Chainalysis, crypto scams and fraud stole at least $14 billion in 2025 and could exceed $17 billion as more illicit addresses are identified.

The FBI warns that scammers often build trust before introducing supposedly exclusive trading opportunities, including crypto futures or AI-based investment programs. One warning sign is promises of guaranteed returns with little to no risk involved.

Another red flag is pressure to deposit more money, often accompanied by fabricated profits displayed on fake websites. Scammers may also request seed phrases or private keys from victims, which can recreate the wallet and transfer its assets.
