Cryptocurrency Scams Surge in Georgia

Share

Georgia residents are being warned about a surge in cryptocurrency scams, particularly targeting older adults. A retired couple lost nearly $800,000 after scammers convinced them to transfer their savings into what appeared to be a legitimate investment account. The case is part of a growing trend across Georgia.

The FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) are urging people to be cautious of unsolicited messages, social media contacts, or fake job offers that may lead to cryptocurrency investment scams. Scammers often spend weeks or months building trust before persuading victims to invest in fraudulent platforms.

Older adults are disproportionately targeted because scammers believe they have larger retirement savings and may be less familiar with cryptocurrency investments. If someone becomes a victim, it's crucial to report the loss within 24 to 48 hours to increase the chances of recovering funds.
