Crypto's Complicated Role in Modern Investing Portfolios

Share

Crypto has moved from the investing wilderness into the mainstream, but its role in a diversified portfolio remains complicated. While it's volatile and offers huge returns, it also comes with significant risk of being wiped out. Most financial professionals view crypto as an alternative investment or a way to gain high-risk, high-growth exposure.

According to Ryan Greiser, CFP and Co-Founder of Opulus, some investors are drawn to crypto's potential for outsized returns, while others see it as a non-sovereign, fixed-supply asset in a world of expanding government debt. However, public interest remains relatively low, with only 17% of U.S. adults saying they have invested in, traded, or used cryptocurrency.

Experts advise limiting exposure to crypto to 5% or less in a diversified portfolio, as it's not suitable for investors who still need to build an emergency fund or those with high-interest debt. The key question is how digital assets interact with the rest of a portfolio and whether that exposure aligns with an investor's goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance.

Lawrence Sprung, CFP and wealth advisor at Mitlin Financial, notes that crypto doesn't replace diversification and its correlations with traditional financial assets will likely continue to evolve. Long-term investors may evaluate crypto as one component of a diversified portfolio, alongside stocks, bonds, and other investments.
