Crypto's Dot-Com Moment: Over 100 Projects Shut Down in 2026
Crypto's dot-com moment arrived in 2026 as over 100 projects shut down, filed for bankruptcy, or became inactive. The exits exposed a market that could no longer support every token, exchange, application, and blockchain created during years of easier funding.
Four major shutdowns emerged in July: BitMEX and BitMart announced wind-downs, while Movement Labs and Storj Labs entered Chapter 11 proceedings. BitMart will close trading operations on January 31, 2027, after stopping new registrations, deposits, and orders on August 26.
The shutdown of Tally exposed a weakness shared by many projects: high user activity and transaction volume failed to generate sustainable revenue. Large dashboard figures didn't cover staff, infrastructure, security, and legal costs. Many projects attracted users without earning enough revenue.
Smaller blockchains also faced pressure from applications migrating to larger networks. Ethereum scaling data shows a market filled with competing projects. Without a distinct use case, their liquidity can remain too shallow to support a full ecosystem.
