Cuban Sees New Crypto in High-End GPUs
Mark Cuban, the billionaire entrepreneur and investor, has made a surprising prediction about the next major investment craze. He believes that high-end graphics processing units (GPUs) used to power artificial intelligence will become the new cryptocurrency.
Cuban made this statement on X, referring to computing hardware as an investable asset class in its own right. This comes at a time when AI is rapidly growing and challenging traditional assumptions about depreciation in computer chips.
However, not everyone agrees with Cuban's prediction. Bitcoin advocate Pierre Rochard responded by pointing out that chip manufacturing lacks the difficulty adjustment and halving mechanism of Bitcoin, which are key features that make it scarce and valuable. Others have joked that Cuban's statement is a sign of a late bear market bottom.
Cuban has a history with cryptocurrency, having previously been a skeptic but later warming up to Ethereum due to its smart contract capabilities and decentralized applications. He even compared Bitcoin to gold as a safe haven asset, stating he would rather own bananas because they have practical utility. However, after selling most of his BTC holdings in May, Cuban expressed disappointment that Bitcoin had failed to behave as a viable macro hedge.
