Custom Blockchain Powers Hyperliquid's On-Chain DEX
Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that runs on its own custom-built blockchain. Unlike most DEXs, which rent infrastructure from existing blockchains like Ethereum or Solana, Hyperliquid built a bespoke layer 1 blockchain specifically for running high-performance order book exchanges.
The result is an on-chain perpetual futures market that rivals centralized exchanges in execution speed, with no off-chain matching engine and no trusted intermediary. The exchange's custom consensus protocol, HyperBFT, is designed to finalize blocks in under one second under normal network conditions, with a median end-to-end latency of roughly 0.2 seconds.
Hyperliquid's on-chain order book model requires extremely high throughput from the underlying chain, but its purpose-built architecture makes it viable at scale. The exchange supports over 150 perpetual markets and has launched a native spot market for direct token purchases without derivatives.
