Cypher Shutdown Looms: Users Urged to Back Up Recovery Data Before September 6

Cypher, a wallet application with its own payment card and token, is shutting down on September 6, 2026. The company's wind-down page lists four key dates: July 8, when the wind-down began; July 16, when final payouts from the rewards program were settled; August 8, when cards closed and were cancelled; and September 6, when the app, dApp, business platform go offline, and the withdrawal window closes. The operator advises users to back up or export their recovery data before the shutdown.

Cypher was a self-custody provider, meaning that private keys to user balances were generated on their device and stayed there. However, in case of a shutdown like this one, only a backup held outside the device can decide whether a user can reach their balance.

Users are advised to export their recovery phrase and test access with a compatible alternative wallet. If they withdraw first and delete the app afterwards, they may overlook remainders they can no longer reach. In contrast, exporting first and testing the import in a second wallet allows users to then withdraw at their leisure and keep a route open for anything left behind.

The operator charges no fee for withdrawals made before September 6, but settlement takes place on Base, a layer 2 network of Ethereum, which can take between 24 and 48 hours. The destination address must be served on Base, or recovering the amount will be laborious.
