CySEC Hosts ESMA Meeting, Highlights Need for Centralized Supervision
The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) hosted the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) Management Board and Board of Supervisors meeting, marking a significant occasion for the EU financial regulatory landscape.
CySEC Chairman Dr. George Theocharides emphasized that hosting these high-level meetings reflects Cyprus' active role within the European supervisory framework and its commitment to regulatory convergence across the EU.
The ESMA Chair, Verena Ross, discussed the progress made in advancing the Savings and Investment Union (SIU) and the Market Integration and Supervision Package (MISP) proposals from December last year. She highlighted that while significant gaps remain between Member States, the MISP aims to address fragmentation by removing barriers in trading, post-trading, and asset management.
Ross also expressed the need for ESMA to evolve into a more centralized supervisor, particularly for cross-border firms and systemic entities, to deliver clearer accountability, consistent outcomes, and holistic oversight. She noted that this would involve transferring supervision of certain entities to ESMA while maintaining national level supervision for the vast majority of capital markets.
