CZ Warns Crypto Industry of Quantum Upheaval
Changpeng Zhao, former CEO of Binance, has downplayed concerns over quantum computing threats to cryptocurrencies but emphasized the need for a widespread overhaul in algorithms. According to a recent whitepaper by Google's Quantum AI team, approximately 6.9 million Bitcoin face growing exposure to quantum attacks that could be executed with far fewer resources than previously thought.
The paper estimates that cracking the cryptography behind Bitcoin and Ethereum could require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, down from earlier estimates in the millions. This has led some to speculate about the long-term security of these assets, but Zhao remains optimistic.
'All crypto has to do is upgrade to Quantum-Resistant (Post-Quantum) Algorithms,' Zhao said on X. 'So, no need to panic.' However, he also acknowledged that executing such a migration across decentralized networks would be challenging due to coordination problems and disagreements over which algorithms to adopt.
Zhao suggested that failing or dormant projects might be better off disappearing rather than becoming easy targets for attackers. He also proposed locking or effectively burning Satoshi's coins if they remain dormant long enough, as they are threatened by quantum attacks.
