CZ Warns Quantum Threat Looms Large as Bitcoin Price Target Revised
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) made two bold predictions at Bitcoin Asia in Hong Kong on August 27. He said Bitcoin will hit $1 million 'much quicker' than its current 25-year timeline, and that quantum computers are advancing fast enough to pose a significant threat to the network's security.
CZ emphasized the need for the community to start preparing defenses against quantum attacks now, not later. He suggested implementing a 6-to-12 month migration window during which networks would adopt quantum-resistant upgrades. After that window closed, dormant Bitcoin sitting in vulnerable addresses could potentially be frozen.
This includes an estimated 1 to 1.1 million BTC believed to belong to Satoshi Nakamoto, which would give an attacker control over roughly 5% of Bitcoin's total supply. The broader vulnerability extends beyond Satoshi's stash, with expert estimates putting the amount of exposed public keys at approximately one-third of the entire circulating supply.
CZ has publicly supported the shift to post-quantum algorithms and has backed a proposal called Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360 (BIP-360). This framework aims to introduce new address formats that rely on cryptographic algorithms believed to be resistant to quantum attacks, giving users a safe harbor to migrate their holdings into.
