D-Wave's Quantum Warning: Can New Protocol Save Bitcoin?
Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave, a quantum computing giant, has issued a warning about Bitcoin's proof-of-work protocol. In an interview with Yahoo Finance, he stated that it is 'clear' that advanced quantum machines will eventually outperform the hardware used for mining Bitcoin.
The timeline for when this might happen is unclear, but Baratz argues that the cryptocurrency industry should consider alternative protocols before the technology matures.
D-Wave has already demonstrated a new quantum proof-of-work protocol that could potentially replace Bitcoin's existing mining mechanism. This protocol relies on quantum optimization problems that can be solved efficiently by quantum systems and aims to preserve the competitive nature of proof-of-work while making it resistant to attacks.
Baratz claims that this alternative is roughly 1,000 times more energy efficient and could eventually become a viable option for Bitcoin. However, any transition would likely face strong pushback from the community, given Bitcoin's existing proof-of-work algorithm has worked well for years.
