Dalio Sounds Alarm on US Debt Crisis: Prepare for Potential Trauma
Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, has sounded the alarm on a potential US debt crisis. In a recent LinkedIn post, he warned that if the government's financial condition is not addressed, it could lead to a major problem.
The current situation is concerning, with the US spending around 40% more than its revenue. This year's revenue stands at $5.5 trillion, while expenses are near $7.5 trillion. If the government were a business, debt service payments would total about $11 trillion, roughly 200% of annual revenue.
Dalio emphasized that the government's financial condition is at an inflection point and urged investors to take action. He recommended staying underweight in bonds while allocating around 10% to 15% of a portfolio in gold and holding 'a bit' of Bitcoin. This, he believes, will help shield against potential trauma.
Dalio also outlined a three-part approach to reduce the deficit: cutting spending, raising tax revenue, and lowering interest rates, all done concurrently to avoid any one adjustment being too large.
