Dalio Sounds Debt Crisis Alarm: Investors Advised to Diversify Portfolios
Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, has expressed concerns about a potential debt crisis in the US economy. He believes that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's plan to increase government debt purchases is a sign that the situation is getting closer to a crisis point.
Dalio points out that the US budget deficit has ballooned to 40% above revenue, resulting in a total debt of over $11 trillion, which would be equivalent to 200% of annual revenue if it were a business. He warns that the cost of repaying principal and servicing this debt will only continue to grow over time.
To avoid a crisis, Dalio recommends a three-part strategy: reducing government spending, raising tax revenue, and lowering interest rates. However, he cautions against making these adjustments by force, citing the importance of taking steps while the economy is healthy.
Dalio also suggests that investors should prepare their portfolios for increased risk by owning cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and gold, recommending a 10% to 15% allocation to gold and 'a bit' of Bitcoin. He notes that the exact timing of a debt crisis is uncertain but estimates it could occur in as little as one year or up to five years if left unchecked.
