Dalio Sounds Debt Crisis Alarm, Urges Gold and BTC Over Bonds
Legendary investor Ray Dalio has sounded the alarm on a potential US debt crisis, warning that it could arrive within three years. The founder of Bridgewater Associates believes investors should reduce their exposure to bonds and allocate 10-15% of their holdings to gold as protection.
In a recent statement, Dalio noted that the federal government is expected to collect $5.5 trillion in revenue this year while spending $7.5 trillion, resulting in a shortfall of around $2 trillion. Additionally, $10 trillion of government debt needs to be refinanced, with interest expenses approaching $1 trillion.
Dalio's solution is to reduce the federal deficit from 6% of GDP to 3% through a combination of spending cuts, increased tax revenue, and lower borrowing costs. However, he recommends that individual investors should not rely solely on government actions and instead diversify across financially strong countries and asset classes.
Specifically, Dalio advises investors to reduce their exposure to debt securities such as bonds and allocate some funds to gold and Bitcoin (BTC), albeit in smaller amounts. This recommendation comes amidst a week of impressive gains for both assets, with BTC surging from $64,000 to nearly $80,000 and gold rebounding from $4,000 to $4,600 per ounce.
