Dalio Sounds Debt Crisis Alarm, Urges Investors to Flee Bonds for Gold and Bitcoin
Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, has sounded the alarm on the US debt crisis, warning that the government's financial condition is at a critical point. He predicts that if left unchecked, the debts will balloon to levels where they become unmanageable without causing significant trauma.
Dalio told CNBC that his team plans to 'make a market' with purchases likely topping $4 billion, and emphasized that the Treasury Department has only limited capacity to buy back bonds. He advised investors to be underweight debt assets like bonds and recommended allocating 10-15% of their portfolios to gold, along with a small amount of Bitcoin.
Dalio also warned about the risks of internal political and external geopolitical conflicts, saying that 'la mayoría de las economías tienen problemas de deuda y déficit similares' (most economies have similar debt and deficit problems). He called for a three-part strategy to reduce the budget deficit: cutting spending, raising tax revenue, and lowering interest rates.
When asked about his timing view, Dalio replied that he thinks a US debt crisis could occur within one to five years, with his 'guess' being that it will come in three years. He emphasized the need for a concurrent approach, stating that all three components must happen at the same time to prevent any one of them from being too large.
