Dalio's Debt Warning Brings Bitcoin into the Treasury Hedge Spotlight
Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater, has sounded the alarm on government debt, warning that it's reaching unsustainable levels. He projects the US federal debt will balloon to $55 trillion or $60 trillion over the next decade, creating a dilemma for policymakers: higher interest rates that slow the economy or central bank money creation that devalues the currency.
Dalio recommends reducing bond exposure and adding assets that can hold up against debt and currency devaluation. He's not calling for investors to dump Treasuries into Bitcoin entirely, but rather treating it as a legitimate debt hedge in small amounts.
The Treasury market has undergone a significant shift, with the pressure now reflecting supply and demand for government debt itself. This changes the role bonds play in a portfolio, making them less of a safe-haven asset. Dalio's framing is less comfortable than the traditional growth trade explanation for Treasury selloffs.
