Darknet Defendant Signals Cooperation in $44M BTC Case
Czech authorities have made progress in a major cryptocurrency laundering investigation after Tomáš Jiříkovský, a key defendant, signaled potential cooperation. Jiříkovský is accused of operating darknet platforms and laundering large volumes of criminal proceeds, including a $44 million Bitcoin donation to the Czech Ministry of Justice.
The donation, which sparked a major political storm when investigators alleged it was a scheme designed to legitimize illicit proceeds from darknet operations, has been at the center of the scandal. Prosecutors are seeking up to a 20-year prison sentence alongside asset confiscation for Jiříkovský, who faces a 9-year sentence request.
Jiříkovský must remain in detention due to flight-risk concerns and the possibility that he still controls part of the illicit cryptocurrency, according to Judge Ivana Otrubová's ruling. Prosecutor Lucie Šlamová reported a change in Jiříkovský's stance after the latest court session, stating 'the defendant has taken certain steps and changed his position regarding the operation of the darknet marketplace and the laundering of criminal proceeds.'
