Dashjr Ousted as BIP Editor Amid Controversy Over Soft Fork Proposal

On August 10, 2026, Luke Dashjr was ousted as a Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIP) editor. He is the first sitting BIP editor to be removed in the protocol's history. The removal occurred using a GitHub pull request and a tally of thumbs-up reactions on the developer mailing list. This method does not have any formal governing document authorization.

BIP 3, which defines the role of editors, lists their duties but makes no mention of how they are appointed or dismissed. This gap has been present since before August 10 and still exists today.

The removal followed a contentious soft fork proposal called BIP-110, which Dashjr helped draft. The proposal attempted to restrict arbitrary data embedded in Bitcoin transactions, specifically the Ordinals inscriptions, BRC-20 tokens, and Runes that critics argue bloat the blockchain, raise fees for ordinary users, and burden node operators with growing storage requirements.

BIP-110 used a modified BIP9 deployment mechanism requiring 55% miner signaling over a two-week difficulty period. However, it only achieved 2.53% of blocks in a single difficulty period, far below the required threshold.
