Debasement Trade Takes Center Stage as Treasury Actions Fuel Rotation into Bitcoin and Gold
A recent surge in investor interest in currency debasement narratives has led to a rotation into gold and Bitcoin, according to The Kobeissi Letter. The letter cited Bloomberg data showing that the word 'debasement' appeared in over 1,500 articles last week, marking the highest weekly count since January.
This surge is largely attributed to Treasury actions under Secretary Scott Bessent to expand buybacks of long-dated bonds. Traders saw this move as inflationary and bullish for hard assets, sending yields lower and the dollar index lower.
Cryptocurrency-based funds recorded $3.2 billion in inflows last week, with BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT) capturing most of the recent demand. Gold funds also saw significant inflows, with $7.3 billion pouring in last week.
Bloomberg senior ETF analyst Eric Balchunas noted that the 'debasement trade' is taking center stage from AI. VanEck's Head of Digital Asset Research Matthew Sigel stated that the Treasury's announcement has led to a reevaluation of a structurally weaker dollar, with Bitcoin being one of the best hedges for this dynamic.
