Decade-Long Sleeping Bitcoins Wake Up Amid Market Turbulence

According to data from Galaxy Research, Bitcoins that have been inactive for over 10 years are beginning to move at an unusual rate this year. A graph published by the company last week tracks how many Bitcoins of each batch 'awakened' in each calendar year since 2012, classified by age cohorts.

The standout is the small band at the bottom of the bar for 2026: a visible strip of coins with 10 years or more in motion, shown in red. Although 2026 is only halfway through, Galaxy marked the bar with hachures to indicate it's not comparable to the completed years on either side.

The trend accelerated over the past few weeks. According to Galaxy's count, six inactive wallets from 2011, 2012, and 2014 moved a total of 553.59 Bitcoins between August 16th and 26th, worth approximately $40.15 million.

One address moved 212 Bitcoins, around $13.66 million, that had been untouched since August 2012, a period of 14 years, representing a gain of roughly 557,640% over a base cost close to $12. Another moved 10.74 Bitcoins, approximately $692,000, inactive since June 2011. The most profitable in the batch, 40 Bitcoins last seen in May 2012, arrived at German stock exchange Boerse Stuttgart Digital with an impressive gain of 1,535,911%.

Movements this old attract scrutiny because few early Bitcoin holders still control their keys, making each awakening a potential signal of long-inactive supply returning to circulation. If the coins are being sold, moved to new custody, or consolidated, it's rarely clear from the network alone, and in most recent cases funds flowed into professional infrastructure rather than the open market.
